One of Telford's finest: Over Bridge, Gloucester
Last year (2007) was the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great civil engineer Thomas Telford.
He was born in Scotland in 1757 and built numerous roads, bridges and canals throughout Britain. Some of his most notable structures still exit here in Gloucestershire.
Two Bridges and a Canal
Telford designed the cast iron Mythe Bridge near Tewkesbury which was built in 1826.
He designed the vast masonry bridge at Over near Gloucester. It was completed in 1828 and remained in use for traffic until 1975.
Telford became involved in the final stages of the construction of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal (formerly the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal) after the project had run into problems. Under his supervision the canal was finally completed in 1827.
