I'm a Radio 1 DJ!

How Ian Chaloner and his uni mate landed their own show on Radio 1!

Gloucestershire's youngest BBC radio presenter has hit the broadcasting big time - waking up the nation on Radio 1!

Ian Chaloner and university pal Chris Sawyer won the chance to present the national station's early breakfast show when they were both working at the University of Nottingham's student radio station URN, named Station of the Year at the 2006 Student Radio Awards.

Ian, who joined BBC Radio Gloucestershire as a broadcast assistant in August after graduating, says: "It's very exciting but a bit terrifying too. But at least I'm not worried about oversleeping on the big day as I'm used to standing in for Faye Hatcher on Radio Gloucestershire's early breakfast show."

Chris, too, is used to getting up early. At uni he answered phones on Radio Nottingham's breakfast show and he's now a news trainee on the same station.

"Chris managed to ruin Jo Whiley's dress by shaking champagne all over her on stage"

The duo will step into the shoes of JK and Joel to present the 4.30 to 7am slot on Good Friday April 6.

Before their big day Ian and Chris are spending a week at Radio 1, finding out how the playlist gets put together, getting involved in the planning of future programmes and setting up competitions.

Ian revealed that his mate may be hoping NOT to run into one of Radio 1's big names after their last encounter at the student radio awards ceremony in Covent Garden in November.

"Our station won five out of the 12 awards on the night so that, along with the free alcohol, had really gone to our heads by the time they announced the top prize," said Ian.

"All 40 of us from Nottingham Uni stormed the stage when we found out we'd won. Chris managed to ruin Jo Whiley's dress by shaking champagne all over her on stage!"
