After more than forty years Gloucester Rugby has announced it wants to get rid of the nickname "Cherry and Whites". The club says it's distancing itself from the term as it doesn't fit with the new, more imposing image it wants to project. Outdated? The traditional nickname reflects the colours of the team shirt and goes back to the 1950s, but is thought by some to be outdated. It has been removed from match day programmes and the club website and is no longer used over the tannoy system. Managing director Ken Nottage confirmed that the club is looking at re-branding the club and said one of the aims was to create a more "imposing" image. He said: "If you look round the league you've got a tiger, you've got a shark, you've got these imposing types of creatures. Cherry and Whites is a colour." Fierce Creatures One suggested "fierce" creature that could be adopted for Gloucester is a lion. The new crest, launched in May this year, depicts the city coat-of-arms, with two lions on either side of a shield bearing a rugby ball slashed with a claw mark, and the shed bar has also been newly renamed The Lion's Den.
