Talk to us and each other

Three years ago a group of students from the University of Gloucestershire began a little cooperative organisation called Step:One.

Lee Maltby: Step:One

Now this student-based outfit is trying to play out with the big boys and grab some lucrative sponsorship deals in a bid to spread the drum n bass message far and wide.

The organisation is basically a promotions company and agency with a whole host of DJs, producers and MCs on their books.

Although mainly concerned with drum n bass they also incorporate funk, reggae and funky house into the mix and the eclectic recipe definitely seems to be working its magic.

Good music

"We stand for good music surrounded by good people," said Step:One spokesperson Lee Maltby. "We are all friends and we came together because of our passion for the music."

"When we first came to uni we found the nightlife was not living up to our expectations so we had to take things into our own hands."

They have now been up and running as an enterprise for three years and the events they run in the south of England are going from strength to strength.

Their ever-growing database of up and coming DJs and MCs includes local award-winning talent like DJ Fade.

"Our database of DJs, producers, graphic designers and promoters is looking really healthy and for us the only logical step is to take this as far and wide as possible", said Lee. "We all have 100% confidence in our chances of success."

Camaraderie

The group prides itself on the trust that they have between them and when talking to them all you do get a real sense of camaraderie and cooperation.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the group land themselves some juicy sponsorship - there's nothing like money to corrupt the most ideologically sound friendships - but hey - let's not be too cynical.
