DJ Fade is part of the 11A story, an exciting arts collective in the heart of Gloucester and at 26 years old he is already making waves in the music industry.

For a hip hop DJ like me the emphasis is always changing to create a live remix of the tracks.

I met him a week after he had won the prestigious Pernod Mixability World Mixing Championships at the trendy Soho club, Pop.

DJ Fade, or just Fade to his friends, got to the final of the competition after beating more than 90 other contestants through the heats.

Fade is no stranger to DJ competitions having won several top awards in the region but his most recent accolade really puts the Gloucester DJ on the map!

Mixin' it up

"Scratching, or mixing," said Fade, " is essentially when a DJ tries to play the best part of a track or tracks.

"House and garage DJs have to try and keep the music going but for a hip hop DJ like me the emphasis is always changing to create a live remix of the tracks."

'Big up' the 11A crew

Fade had the decks set up in one of the downstairs rooms at 11A and used two records to demonstrate his fast, rhythmic style.

His set at Pop was 20 minutes long and he won his World title on the strength of his skill and the audience reaction.

"It was a great night," grinned Fade. "I've been DJing for five years and I managed to win the competition despite their equipment being much lower spec than mine."

Fade is also working on several other projects in the county. He has a show lined up with GFM Community Radio (106.7 FM) called Late Manoeuvres that he'll be presenting with Dirty Lyle and Action Jackson.

He is also a writer and photgrapher for Grandslam Magazine (formerly Big Daddy) and he has residencies at Chemistry and Vital.

He's certainly a young talent to keep your eyes on and you can hear him play out during May in Cheltenham!
