Glastonbury Guide
Festival Chic
Festivals used to be about embracing your inner grime. People wore their mud with pride and boasted about how long it was since they'd last had a shower (on average, 3 whole days).
Then Kate, Sienna and Gwynie turned up backstage at Glastonbury, wafting their fragrant and suspiciously tidy hair around the place and generally making the rest of us look a bit, well, dirty.
How do they do it? Luckily the Slink team know a thing or two about festivals and we can reveal the sleb secrets to staying glam whatever the weather.
Hair
Rain + Sun + No Washing + Living in a hot tent with no hairdryer / straighteners = SCARY HAIRY LADY!
You will need
A hairbrush, leave in conditioner, head scarf, hat, hair powder (yes, hair powder.)
Top tips
Wash your hair at the last possible minute before you go thus maximising good-hair time.
Bring a quality brush and try to remember to brush your hair before you pass out every night. A Mason Pearson brush is an investment, and particularly good on festy hair as it redistributes oil every time you use it.
If it's sunny, wash hair in cold water on the second day, apply leave-in conditioner, and leave to dry naturally. If it's cold, don't risk hypothermia, use hair powder to suck up the grease (Bumble & Bumble's come in 4 shades.) Talcum powder is a budget alternative for blondes.
And, if the situation gets completely out of control, whack on a brightly coloured headscarf a la Nicole, or hide under a hat.
Shopping list
Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, from £15
Mason Pearson Pocket Nylon Hairbrush, from £22
Skin
Keeping up a good cleansing routine is the secret to perfect festival skin.
You will need
Sunscreen, wipes, facial blotters, water, a large mirror and waterproof mascara.
Top tips
Wear high factor sunscreen and don't forget to reapply, even if you have overdone it on the pear cider. Stay out of the sun at the hottest part of the day and NEVER EVER let yourself fall asleep in the sun. You will fall asleep a beautiful sleepy festival princess and awake as an angry lobster.
Drink lots of water, it keeps your skin looking plump and will save you from the hangover pixies.
Use waterproof mascara because it will rain at some point, and the "punched in the face" look isn't a big one right now.
Bring the biggest mirror you can carry. It might sound high maintenance, but you can't pull off that "effortless" make-up look without it.
Keep shine at bay with facial blotters. Try T-Zone No Shine papers or if you're feeling flush Shisedo Pureness have anti-oxidant properties to smooth and condition skin.
Skin wipes are the saviours of festivals. If you can possibly remove your makeup before bed, do it! You'll wake up looking fresher and it'll keep your pores clog free thus preventing spots.
Shopping list
Paul & Joe Blotting Paper - ££10
Shisedo Pureness - £20
Johnson's Baby Wipes - around £4
Clothes
Unlike Kate and co. you won't be travelling to the event in a private helicopter, so pack light.
You will need
A fab, traffic stopping dress for the evenings. Believe us, you will wear it!
Lots of layers for taking off and putting back on again when the weather is being mental.
A huge boyfriend-type parka jacket for the chilly nights and a waterproof for when the heavens open.
Flip flops: They take up no space and, hey, it might be really hot...
Wellies, but take a tip from la Moss and ditch the girly floral ones in favour of classic black, way less try-hard and probably a lot more waterproof!
A massive pair of sunglasses to disguise the fact that you got no sleep last night, or the night before.
And don't forget
Bin liners - They hold all your rubbish, and you can use them to waterproof leaky shoes!
Tampons - Essential if you're going to be on.
Panty liners - For any "I can't find clean pants" days.
Loo roll - Like gold dust on day three.
Condoms - You never know!
Money - If your wardrobe isn't working out, you can usually find vintage bargains at the stalls.
Perfume - It's like a bath in a bottle. Well, ok it's nothing like a bath, but it'll do.
