Alabama 3

Alabama 3

The genre-trashing Brixton band played three stages at this year's festival: Jazz World, Leftfield and an unplugged set on the Avalon Stage. Their retrospective album Hits and Exit Wounds compiles their unique brand of country-rock-dance-soul.

The Bamas are easily the best live band in Britain, and the set on the Jazz Stage was absolutely outstanding

The full band were great but the unplugged set was the best thing that I saw at Glastonbury. With an acoustic slide guitar, harmonica and four main vocalists they had a bigger sound than most of the bands with drums, bass keyboards etc. This is what music should be about: stunning songs with a touch of the bizarre and subtle ( sometimes) humour!

I saw all three Alabama 3 sets, and each one was awesome. The Jazz World set contained a lot from their first album, Exile on Cold harbour lane, but with the added bonus of the extra backing singers who weren't in the band when recorded. They played for an hour and had the crowd singing from the start, even though it was raining! Their mix of gospel, elctronica and country blues gained a lot of new fans, and they also did the crowd pleasers such as "Peace in the Valley" and "Woke Up this morning" (famous as the Sopranos theme song)! The voice of Devlin Love (the female vocalist) was amazing, and complemented Larry Love's dulcit tones perfectly. The leftfield set was a continuation of the first set with more from exile, inclduing "Mao tse tung" and "you don't dance to techno anymore", two songs I thought they would do on the Jazz world stage and included a roll call from people who had been innocently jailed. This also last for an hour and was only seen by a few hundred - the bonus of being on a stage not highlighted in the small neck guide. Finally, the Avalon stage on saturday, just accompanied by a guitarist and harmonica, they proved their versatility, doing a wide range of songs from "last train to mashville", and again engaging with the audience all the way through, some of whom lost their voices, and the section where the guitarist ran out of steam before going all "honky tony" was an audience partcipation treat to watch! It was amusing as they over-ran and the tent began to fill up with Will Young fans who normally wouldn't see this type of thing, and it was good to see the enthusiastic reaction from some of them, especially when Devlin signed off with some stunning vocals. They were one of the highlights of the festival, and would storm the Pyramid if let loose on it, but for some reason, they don't get the press coverage that their eclectic and entertaining music deserves!if you ever get a chance to see them - go for it, you'll be entertained and hear some incredible music.

Jazz World set - They were only the best band I saw at Glastonbury this year, but sadly because they moved their slot on the Avalon Stage I missed the uplugged set, that's one you owe me A3. Superb energy and audience rapport, the whole of the Jazz World field was rocking.
