Type Sizes

The BBC typographic style is bold and confident. Ensure that there is a clear hierarchy in the application of type sizes.

Please note that these measures are in points rather than pixels. For more information see Tablet Device Considerations Resolution & Pixel Density.

For tablet devices, font size recommendations (alongside leading and tracking values) are dependent on three main factors:

The Pixel Density Display of a tablet screen varies across devices. This means, that font sizes are relative to the device on which they are being displayed.

Whilst Arial 13pt on 16pt leading is suitable for desktop reading, it feels too small for most tablets. As a result, the smallest font size that GEL recommends for tablet devices is 15pt on 20pt for body text (with 14pt on 18pt for image captions).

Setting a minimum font size recommendation for a tablet service should not be judged on a desktop screen, but on the target device itself.
