Open Gardens

Joe Swift joins Carol Klein to follow the trials and tribulations of keen gardeners preparing to open their plots to the public.

Gardeners love to show off the fruits of their labour, and what better way than to be part of the National Gardens Scheme? To get listed in the Yellow Book is no mean feat as there are exacting standards to be met. However, in this series Carol and Joe provide their expert advice to gardeners who are embarking on the nerve-wracking journey to put their gardens on the NGS map.

  • The Yellow Book lists around 3,500 gardens to visit in England and Wales. You can buy a copy of the book or find a garden near you on the NGS website.
  • Is your garden good enough to open to the public? The NGS is open to everyone. It has something for the avid gardener, the novice, the day-tripper, and the environmentalist. See what it takes to get your garden accepted.
  • The NGS is a significant contributor to some of the most important charities in the UK and has been opening gardens to raise money for over 75 years. For more about the activities of the NGS visit www.ngs.org.uk.
