There are several fine tulip species, sometimes called Botanical tulips, which are easily grown under garden conditions, and this is one of the most vigorous, especially in a hot sunny rock garden or naturalised in a gravel bed. It is a native of Central Asia and produces a few long leaves and seven or more fragrant flowers to a stem. These are creamy white, with a yellow or orange centre, and eventually open wide like sparkling stars. It is very early, sometimes appearing in late February, so appreciates shelter without shading the sunlight it loves. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
