Found growing wild in California, US, this handsome pine has attracted the attention of the Royal Horticultural Society who have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). It is conical in shape at first, becoming broadly domed or columnar with age. The stiff, blue-green needles are borne in pairs. They contrast attractively with the brown female cones which can stay on the tree for up to 30 years. Plant in a sunny position in well-drained soil, where it will make a useful specimen or windbreak tree.
