Grown for its colourful red winter stems, this deciduous shrub also produces a beautiful autumnd display when its leaves turn red before they fall. It will eventually make a large plant if not pruned regularly. Pruning also helps to rejuvenate plants and replace old dull stems with brighter coloured young growth. In April, cut back the stems to within two or three buds from the base.
