Found growing wild in the mountain meadows of China, this hardy perennial is a dramatic sight in summer, especially when grown en masse. Tiers of reddish-pink flowers are held on pale stems above rosettes of lance-shaped leaves. A good choice for a damp, woodland garden, it enjoys moist, acidic to neutral soil in a partially shaded spot. Dig in plenty of organic matter, such as garden compost, before planting.
