Sometimes incorrectly listed as Malvastrum, this is virtually hardy and is often grown in sheltered borders, although it may die down out of sight each winter. It is a North American shrubby perennial that makes an excellent large container specimen, with branching stems that grow quite tall in a pot in a sunny sheltered position. The variable flowers, from coral pink with a hint of apricot to bright orange-red, are about 2.5cm (1in) across, produced on narrow graceful spikes very freely all summer and right up to the frosts.
