'Hispi' is a pointed variety, as most early kinds are - later varieties are round and solid, and stand for longer when mature. Sow seeds from March to May and plant out from June to July into rows 45cm (18in) apart. It can also be autumn sown, over-wintered in a coldframe and planted out early for cutting in spring. Planting Hyssop or Rosemary as companion plants may help deter cabbage moths and Dill is said to improve the health and growth of cabbage crops. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
