Alocasias are found in tropical Asia and are grown for their large, heavily veined leaves. Most varieties need a warm greenhouse and high humidity during the growing season to flourish, but some, such as A. amazonica, make interesting houseplants. This variety has very dark green, glossy leaves with a contrasting white veins and margins and has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence. Grow in an equal mix of composted bark, loam and sand in filtered light.
