This is variously described as a species climber or a rambler rose, but the difference in pruning techniques is irrelevant as 'Kiftsgate' is so rampant that pruning cannot restrain it, and most of the shrub will normally be out of reach. It is ideal for growing in very large trees or over large buildings, or as ground cover across large sloping banks of ground. The stems are a mass of blossom in July when the enormous cascading heads of small blooms appear, and in autumn the whole plant glitters with small, vivid amber hips. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
