Bring buds of the Christmas rose indoors to enjoy their huge white flowers on the festive table. 'Potter's Wheel' is a fine variety that was introduced in the 1950s. Its blooms can measure up to 10cm (4in) across and have beautiful contrasting yellow stamens in the centre. It needs limey, humus-rich soil in dappled shade to thrive. Dig in plenty of organic matter, such as compost, before planting and mulch around the plant every year.
