Paeonia suffruticosa, Moutan is a lovely tree paeony, handsome while in leaf and quite stunning when its huge flowers open. The foliage is bold and elegantly sculpted, a feature in itself. Plants are normally free-flowering, bearing a succession of enormous cup-shaped flowers, often 30cm (12in) across, in a range of colours from purple to white. Feed well and mulch every spring.
