The tall flower stalks of this fritillary bear over 20 pendant bells, which range from greenish brown to deep purple in colour. It is one of the more tolerant species and needs a hot site to flourish. Like all fritillarias it will add a touch of drama to the spring border associating particularly well with perennial grasses, silver-leaved shrubs and other early flowering bulbs. Plants will benefit from a mulch of sharp grit to deter slugs from damaging the flower spikes as they grow.
