Also known as 'Aureomarginatum', this is the golden variegated form of the familiar hedging privet, a tough and versatile shrub from Japan. When left untrimmed, the green form will make a large shapely shrub with profuse but rather unpleasant-smelling white flowers in late summer. The golden form, 'Aureum' or golden privet, produces an excellent hedge, withstanding clipping as well as the green type. It also makes a fine informal shrub that creates a bright spot in shady parts of the garden. Cut out any shoots that revert to the standard green.
