Liatris grows with stiff, upright stems and produces bottlebrush flowers in summer. These open from the top downwards, above a rosette of grassy foliage. 'Kobold' is a compact variety with mauve-purple flowers. Plants prefer a combination of summer moisture and winter dryness, but if this is impossible, try growing plants in pots. Place one in 15-20cm (6-8in) pot or three in a 38cm (15in) pot, in John Innes potting compost, and sink these to the rims in a sunny border in summer. Then, in autumn, lift them and stand in a greenhouse or sunroom for the winter.
