A plant that should be more widely grown, this purple-coloured hellebore flowers in early spring, usually before the new leaves emerge. The blooms can begin to open as early as mid-December. Found wild in eastern Europe, it grows in grassy alpine meadows. In the garden, it enjoys more sun than other hellebores, but will do well in dappled shade such as under shrubs or trees.
