Slightly less hardy than its cousin A. megapotamicum, this handsome and vigorous Chilean shrub is best planted in late spring to give it time to mature before winter. A sunny warm wall with good shelter from frosty winds is the best position for it in most gardens, although it will make a large, prominent, free-standing shrub in milder areas. The downy, deeply-cut leaves, a subtle grey-green and vine-shaped, are attractive all season, but especially when backing the profusion of wide open white to mauve flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
