This clump-forming perennial has a strong garlic smell, earning it its American common name of Society garlic. The smell comes from the crushed leaves or flower stems making it unsuitable for a cut flower. Apart from the garlic smell, the plant is worth growing for its beautiful flowers large heads of lavender blooms on tall stems from mid-summer to early autumn. In frost prone areas, grow in the greenhouse or in pots which can be moved to a frost free place in the winter.
