Valued for its dense solid foliage and rich colouring, this form of the Japanese cedar forms a conical shape that is naturally slow growing and compact, but eventually a medium-size tree. It makes a good architectural shape to team with craggier conifer shapes in a classic heather and conifer garden, but also looks good as a feature in a border. Of all conifers, cryptomerias must have soil that stays moist - they go brown quickly in dry conditions and browned growth is not replaced.
