Thick leaves that are distinctively puckered, grey-green and suffused with a darker metallic colour, make this one of the more sought-after hostas for those of you who are after subtlety in a border. 'Frances Williams' also has wide, irregular green-yellow margins to these cupped, heart-shaped leaves that are 20cm (8in) long. It bears greyish-white flowers on long stalks from early summer. The Royal Horticultural Society has recognised its outstanding excellence by giving it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
