Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' is one of Matthew Biggs' favourite plants for brightening up shady spots. It can either be used for covering walls and fences or as ground cover. This ivy is less vigorous than the plain, green-leaved variety, but if it begins to grow beyond its bounds, simply trim it back at any time of year. It prefers a partially shaded site with well-drained alkaline soil and does well against a north-facing wall. People with sensitive skin should wear gloves when handling ivy as its sap can be an irritant. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
