A useful plant for shade, Hacquetia epipactis produces its unusual green, yellow-eyed bracts in late winter and early spring. Emerald-green leaves follow this display. It's a clump-forming perennial that spreads slowly by short rhizomes. Fully hardy, the plant grows well in a shaded site with humus-rich, moist soil. Given the right conditions, it's generally trouble-free, although it may need some protection from slugs and snails in spring, and does not like its roots being disturbed. Propagate by division in spring.
