A stunning sight in late spring and early summer, Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus has sword-shaped leaves and produces tall spikes of deep magenta flowers. Hailing from the Mediterranean region, it is borderline hardy in this country. In warmer areas, such as Cornwall, it may survive outdoors all year round. But in colder parts, it is best to lift the corms each autumn to overwinter in frost-free conditions.
