This variety of the classic spring-flowering shrub is smaller and more upright but gets bushy with age. It has small bronzed leaves which later change to purple-green. It flowers early with pure-white, single flowers. To grow it successfully you need an acid soil but if your soil is limey, it will grow superbly in a large tub filled with ericaceous, or lime-free compost. A good tip for container-grown camellias is to use rainwater from a water butt instead of tap water which contains too much lime.
