This camellia is a tree-like shrub and produces an abundance of large, semi-double carmine-rose flowers. It has glossy evergreen leaves so even after flowering it is a decorative shrub for the rest of the year. It does need an acid soil but will also grow well in a large container if you fill it with ericaceous, or lime-free compost. This cultivated variety has a long history of growing in the UK and one planted in 1840 by Joseph Paxton can be seen flowering today in the camellia house at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
