Camellias are classic spring-flowering shrubs with colourful waxy flowers and glossy foliage. 'Grand Slam' has vivid, dark red, double or semi-double flowers and superb glossy leaves. It should be positioned in a sheltered position to avoid cold winds and late frosts which can scorch the flowers. All camellias need acid soil but if your soil is limey, you can grow one superbly in a large tub filled with ericaceous, or lime-free compost. For container-grown camellias avoid using tap water as it contains too much lime; use rainwater from a water butt instead.
