One of the finest tulips, this cultivar bears fragrant, double, deep mahagony-red flowers in late spring. The double, peony-like flowers have heavy heads, which often need staking. These tulips look superb planted in drifts throughout the garden, or en masse to intensify their deep, brilliant colour. Tulips will thrive in almost any type of soil where there is good drainage. The bulbs require a period of cold so plant before the first frost. This minimises the risk of attack from fungal diseases, such as tulip fire. Any bulbs that become infected with this disease are best thrown away and the ground they were planted in should not be used to grow tulips for several years.
