This evergreen, suckering perennial is compact in habit and grows faster than other species of Dicksonia. Feathery, roughly-textured fronds crown an elegant, slender trunk. D. squarrosa is frost tender, and best kept as a conservatory plant in the UK. Plants favour a cool, well-lit site, but don't perform well in strong sunlight. The trunk can absorb water, so keep it moist, and never let the roots dry out. Regular removal of dead fronds keeps the plant tidy. Propagate by surface sowing spores in a heated glasshouse during summer.
