Field rose

An extremely useful wild Rambler, the 'Field Rose' is perfectly happy in wild or cottage gardens in poor soil. It'll romp into high hedges, its bendy stems locking themselves in place using hooked thorns. It also scrambles out long stems covered in pure white, musky scented flowers in early summer. They are followed in autumn by round red hips. Early in the 19th century it was crossed with various other old roses to create a group of vigorous, climbing, Ayrshire roses, 'Ayrshire Splendens' being the most successful.
