A New Zealand tree, it can reach 25m (82ft) but is very slow-growing and takes at least a decade to achieve its peak flowering performance. Its two big attractions are the vivid red summer flowers, and the leaves which are at their best when being flung about in a wind, mixing the dark green on the top side and the paler colour below. Give it a warm, sunny, sheltered site.
