Sarcococca species are Chinese and Himalayan evergreen shrubs, related to the common box.. Most are fairly small, slow-growing plants, broader than they are tall, and very shade-tolerant although they also grow well in full sun if the roots are kept consistently moist. They are suckering shrubs that make good ground cover once established. This variety is winter-flowering with a powerful fragrance which compensates for the small size of the blooms. The variety 'Digyna' is a good alternative that's very hardy in exposed positions.
