A superb 'Old Garden Rose', it's the largest gallica (known for their beautiful flowers), and has large, rich red, mid-summer flowers with a mass of petals and an interesting, smooth, sliced-off look as if a ball has been cut in half. Growth is strong and erect, and plants do need plenty of space; either grow it in its own small circular bed in a lawn, or as part of a summer-flowering hedge with other Old Roses, e.g. the light pink Gallica 'Ipsilante' and the creamy white x alba 'Alba Maxima'.
