Thyme is one of the best-known and most widely used herbs, very popular in its basic culinary form and also woth using in a rock garden or as an edging to garden paths. 'Pink Chintz' is a striking variety with pinkish, purple flowers. It grows into a spreading carpet of tight, shrubby growth and is ideal for filling in crevices in rock gardens and patios. As an added bonus the foliage also releases a strong aroma when crushed or brushed against. To get the best from your plants clip them back annually after flowering. Plants revel in hot sunshine and drought, so give them very good drainage, and in cold gardens protect them from hard frost or grow them as container plants.
