One for the exotic garden, this Mexican, tree-like succulent (with a trunk) has a spray of stiff, arching, strap-like leaves. There is a dramatic summer show of bell-like white flowers. The only way to grow it in the UK is in a container, stood outside in a sheltered sunny position over summer before being moved to a gently heated conservatory over winter. While in active growth give it a regular drink of water, but do so only occasionally over winter while dormant (in fact the colder the winter conditions, the drier it needs to be kept). Make sure that the compost has plenty of added grit for free-drainage.
