An interesting ornamental-cum-herb which can be grown in herb gardens or to the front of the border, where it makes a short, tidy mound. The stems are purple, the leaves rounded and green, and there are domed heads of rosy purple flowers. It's a recent introduction from Germany, and is quite happy in poor soil. If you need plenty of oregano leaves for cooking, it's best to buy the ordinary kind, Origanum marjorana.
