Bilberry

A relative of the American blueberry, the bilberry is a common site on the heaths, moors and in the woodlands of northern Europe. It forms a small, low-growing, spreading shrub about 30cm (1ft) high. Plants are covered with small, white tubular flowers in spring which are followed in summer by blue-black berries. The growth is compact with small green leaves. It requires a damp, acid soil in full sun or light shade to thrive. The fruits are sweet and edible and the leaves are often used in herbal remedies.
