Tree peonies differ from herbaceous types because they form lasting woody stems that remain throughout the year and support their growth and flowers. ' Hoki' is a lovely tree paeony, handsome while in leaf and quite stunning when its huge flowers open. The foliage is bold and elegantly sculpted, a feature in itself. Plants are normally free-flowering, bearing a succession of enormous cup-shaped flowers, often 30cm (12in) across. Peonies dislike root disturbance and can flower poorly for some years after transplanting, so choose your planting site wisely. Keep plants healthy by incorporating plenty of organic matter into the soil before planting. Feed well and mulch every spring.
