An exquisite South African perennial for the edge of a pond, which is best planted in an aquatic basket and gently lowered into water about 23cm deep. In spring it produces a mass of large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves up to 45cm long, and from the end of spring to the middle of summer it has showy, pure white flowers. In winter it needs a minimum temperature of 100C, and therefore needs to be given a protective covering, or the basket can be lifted and put in a sheltered outdoor place in a tray of water so that it does not dry out.
