A popular exotic palm since Victorian times. Despite its common name it's actually native to Japan and the Ruyuku islands, where it forms a large, elegant, single-stemmed tree. In colder climates it is usually grown in large containers, where it makes an exotic addition to the large conservatory or summer patio. Growing from a central point the large fan-shaped leaves tend to droop at the tips, giving the plant the additional common name of fountain palm. Although not hardy it is a versatile plant that will tolerate hot, humid and also cooler conditions.
