Blechnum is a common fern that's found throughout the country growing beside streams and in damp shady crevices. 'Klwaklwa' is an introduction from New Zealand with long narrow fronds that form a very distinctive rosette. As the fronds die back the bases of their stems gradually form a low trunk. It makes an ideal plant for the spring border where its foliage provides the perfect complement to bright spring flowers. It will also provide interest in damp, shady, borders where it will flourish in a humus-rich soil.
