This black elder is grown for its attractive, musk-scented, small, white flowers, impressive clusters of glossy black berries in late summer, and its yellow-margined, dark green leaves. It prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The large shrub is suitable for the back of a shrub or mixed border, but also looks good in a wild or natural setting, such as a woodland garden. While birds love the fruits, humans should be careful as excessive consumption can cause nausea, especially if eaten raw.
