The California poppy (named the California state flower in 1890) has long been a favourite hardy, drought-tolerant annual that once sown will self seed for many years, often forming a mat of bluish-grey foliage that gives rise to delightful, single, poppy flowers, 7cm (3in) across. The flowers close at night, re-opening each morning. In some Mediterranean countries, this plant readily seeds itself becoming a weed in the countryside, but fortunately in the UK it is unlikely to be problem. Fully hardy, it prefers a sunny position and grows well in poor, well-drained soil. It is ideal for rock gardens and gaps in paving. Dead-head regularly to ensure a long flowering period.
