Scopolia is a little-known creeping, hardy perennial that deserves to be planted in more gardens. A member of the potato family, it produces attractive, brownish-purple to red, bell-shaped flowers from mid- to late spring. Its dark green, oblong leaves have pointed tips and prominent veins make them particularly attractive. This plant grows naturally in central and south-east Europe and is perfectly hardy in the UK. It is ideally planted in a shady area of the garden for a splash of spring colour.
